Club Meetings

All Club meetings are at 12:30 p.m. on the first Friday of the month at the Carlsbad Dove Library unless otherwise noted. Guests are always welcome!

September 2, 2011     12:30 p.m.

Chefs Wendy Hileman, CEO, and Greg Mantuano, CFO, for the Healthy Adventures Foundation will teach us about healthy cuisine that tastes great and is nutritional.  Wendy, a Ph.D. Candidate, is an avid urban farmer with a home garden, chickens and a tilapia pond.  Greg is the Executive Chef with over 20 years experience in the restaurant industry.  They both are interested in connecting people with seasonal fruits and vegetables and using foods as a complementary tool toward good health by eating to live instead of living to eat!  We will be eating and enjoying the salads they prepare for us.

October 7     Field Trip     1:00 p.m.

Tour of Peder and Julie Norby’s Carlsbad estate adjacent to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon.  The Heron’s award-winning house is almost entirely powered by the sun.  This prairie-style home is fronted by rows of cabernet grapes and bejeweled by copper sculpture and mosaic tile art.  We will have the opportunity to taste and enjoy his prized wine.  The Norby’s backyard is planted with drought-resistant sycamore, deer grass, coyote bush, ceanothus, white sage, Sangiovese grapes and a gently rolling brook.  The irrigation system uses rainwater that flows from the roof.  Their remodeled home was named “Heron’s House” for the winged visitors that frequently drop in from the Lagoon.

November 4     12:30 p.m.

Ohana Creations of Carlsbad (www.ohanacreations.com) and club member, Gretchen Ashton, are teaming up to teach us how to make a Haku—Polynesian head lei.  The presentation includes a video collage of tropical floral photography from Hawaii, Fiji and Tahiti, a little history and island lore. Bring Polynesian-themed food to share and we'll provide the music.

December 2     12:30 p.m.

December is time for our annual Holiday Party. Bring a potluck dish with serving utensil, canned goods to donate to the needy, and a wrapped gift that will be auctioned off. This auction is one of the most fun and lucrative events of the year…you never know what you’re going to get! Cash or checks accepted. Proceeds support our Club and the various recipients of our donations.

January 6, 2012     12:30 p.m.

Our member, Jay Klopfenstein, will show us the many uses of the Earth Box Garden Kits provided by the Carlsbad Community Garden Collaborative of which he is President.  Jay and his students have developed a Green Audit Program to help local businesses and homeowners save on energy, water and natural resources.  Through their Garden Collaborative grant, this newly-formed non-profit makes possible placement of Earth Boxes in our community and schools.  The Earth Boxes are great for placement in patio areas next to the kitchen or easily placed in one’s own backyard.  Jay will provide a slide show and video clips of how these portable demonstration gardens grow healthy herbs and vegetables.  They use half the amount of water and generate twice the produce.

February 3     12:30 a.m.

Sergio from Plant Play Nursery will present new and unusual plants for us to learn about and purchase.  His focus will be on showing evergreen plants with colorful foliage that provide beauty all year.  Some possibilities will include phormiums, pittosporums and even succulents.

March 2     12:30 a.m.

Balboa Park Japanese Gardens docent tour ($2.50/member) with an optional lunch on the Prado.  Details will be announced closer to the event.

April 6     Field Trip     Time TBA

Tour of The West Farm conducted by Executive Chef, Eugenio Martignago.  This is the fresh herb and vegetable garden owned and tended by the folks at Bistro West restaurant in Carlsbad.  A no-host luncheon will be served at their restaurant after the tour.

May 4     12:30 p.m.

We will celebrate spring together with a potluck lunch at the Dove Library for our annual Luncheon and Installation of Club Officers for 2012-13.

June 1     9:30 a.m.

The Annual Garden Tour will be held.  The Tour benefits members, their friends and potential members by exposing them to a variety of landscape designs, irrigation systems and specific plants they can incorporate in their own gardens.  Maps with directions will be given to drivers.  A carpool meeting place will be announced and a no-host lunch will follow at a restaurant TBD.

August 3     12:00 p.m.

This annual Summer Garden Party will be at a member’s home. Bring a dish to share and a serving utensil.  The day and further details will be announced.
