Mary Tornborg
Mary Tornborg is probably the best example of what a Garden Club member can achieve. Besides welcoming all new members and keeping an eye out for them for the first few meetings, Mary has been part of every activity that we are involved in. When we were discussing how our Club could earn some money for our various Community Grants, Mary came up with an idea. She asked Evergreen Nursery if we could redeem various pots to avoid having them ending up in the landfill. So she collects black pots, 1 and 5 gallon size, and the plastic flats. She then brings them in and redeems them, and with all of the active gardeners that really adds up. We’re making money and doing something for the environment. Meanwhile she has been helping a friend of her daughter’s to restore her garden. Recently widowed and retired, it was hard for this lady to get back into the garden where she has spent so much time with her husband. Mary has been able to help her along on this spiritual journey by making suggestions for the right plants for different parts of her garden. In gratitude for Mary’s help, she has made a $500 donation to our scholarship fund.
The Carlsbad Garden Club is very grateful for this donation and for Mary!
