Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation (AHLF) Community Membership
Club Chair: Mary Hassing
Improvement of
this natural resource in our community is our primary goal. Our Garden Club members volunteer to weed,
deadhead and prune all the native California plants throughout the
property. The Lagoon director springs us
into action before their educational seminars and community festivities. The Club sustains
a Community Membership in AHLF by donating $250 to help sustain their goals to
protect native birds and plants. The
donation also allows AHLF to put on educational events for Carlsbad school
children of all levels.
Petals for Patriots
Club Chair: Ellen McGrath-Thorpe
We are one of six
North County garden clubs that bring floral arrangements and a basket of
seasonal fruits to the Wounded Warriors at Camp Pendleton every month. A system organizing this on a rotating basis
was instituted by our member, Ellen McGrath-Thorpe. Dos Gringos, a local flower wholesaler, has
donated the flowers when available. If
not, we’ll buy $80 worth of flowers.
Each club purchases their own vases, ribbons, floral preservative and
labels. Our Club is responsible for the
months of December and January.
Discovery Group
Club Chair: Helena Gillmore
This is a
sub-group of the Club that is dedicated to educating and improving members by
visiting each others’ gardens. The Group
also attends local garden programs such as the Water Conservation Gardens at
Cuyamaca. Through the guidance of our
member Sue Kelly-Cochrane, we have made organic fertilizer to sell to members
and at plant sales. We assist local
residents to dig up and recycle their unwanted plants.
Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative
Club Chair: Gretchen Ashton
The Collaborative
is a dedicated group of individuals who have come together to expand community
gardens within the city of Carlsbad. Its
members represent well-established community organizations like our Garden Club. They all promote an informed awareness, connection
to and stewardship of the natural environment.
Their goals are to inspire and educate the Carlsbad community in
environmental sustainability practices, protection of native habitats, and
personal wellness, by engaging diverse groups in community gardening. For more information: www.carlsbadcommunitygardens.org
Mira Costa College Scholarship
Club Chair: Wendy Morris
A $1,200-scholarship
is awarded to a student majoring in horticulture at our local community
college. The College selects the
recipient and we follow up by inviting the winner to attend our September
meeting to speak to our members. Congratulations
go out to our scholarship recipient this year, Jason Duran of Escondido.
Pennies for Pines
Club Chair: Robin Griswold
Our donations are
collected at every Club meeting for this California Garden Clubs’ Conservation
Project started in 1941. The Project
restores forests devastated by wildfires, disease and insect infestation in the
Cleveland National Forest.
